POINTERS TO HELP YOU SELL OR BUY JEWELRY

Here’s a quick checklist of knowledge you should have before you go shopping for expensive jewelry.

  1. What is a Karat? It’s a good idea to know that gold karat number varies with weight, design, finishing and country of origin. Finishing can be done by hand or by machine, and this makes a difference. 24 karat gold, or pure gold, is too soft for molding into wearable jewelry, thus it needs to be mixed with other metals to strengthen it. The metal used to mix into the gold can change its color. WHAT TO KNOW – if it’s less than 10kt (roughly 42% gold), than it can’t be sold as gold legally. You’ll hear these terms: “fill”, “electroplated” or “overlay” and that means it just has a thin gold coat on the piece of jewelry.
  2. What are the four C’s? Don’t expect to read this and have a working knowledge of the four C’s, but I can at least acquaint you with the language. WHAT TO KNOW – the four C’s are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat. If a jeweler can’t discuss these in great detail, they don’t know enough to be selling you jewelry, keep shopping.
  3. Be aware of chain stores who employ retail sales clerks AND have no actual jewelers on staff. WHAT TO KNOW  – Local jewelers will almost always have a more educated and knowledgeable staff.
  4. If you are going to purchase a really expensive piece of jewelry, USE A MAJOR CREDIT CARD AND HAVE IT APPRAISED immediately.

Gold Bullion made a bad batch!

In a world of economic turmoil, downgraded status, and the U.S. dollar sinking faster than the Titanic, many of us are scrambling to find a secure, safe and reliable means of investing our monies.  Precious metals, such as gold bullion gives us that security we are all craving.  However, here is a “BUYER BEWARE” scam that is sweeping the nation.  There are “brokers” running around and targeting our senior citizens to quickly invest their savings into these precious metals, but only taking the money, not bringing back the metals they “invested”.  As with anytime you are looking to invest, due diligence is required to fully investigate any and all companies!

Gold - Bullion Bars

In Florida, these precious metal exchange stores were going up faster than Starbucks, Walgreens and medicial dispensaries combined!  Most recently, Gold Bullion Exchange founder, Jamie Campany, plead guilty to fraud.

 He was one of many who took client’s money with no intent to purchase the precious metals he promised.  Ok, that’s the bad news.  Good news, is now this under regulated commodity is now over-sought by US Commodity Futures Commission.  If the trade of monies to bullion isn’t finalized (metal being delivered to the original buyer) within 28 days, that is a violation of the new law and the federal government prosecute.Lee Josephson, of Raymond Lee Jewlers suggests, “It is always a good time to buy precious metals. National Jeweler published an article featuring the emerging jewelry designers that will be featured at the JA Summer Show, currently taking place at The Javits Center, New York, NY.  With enough time in between the NY Antique Jewelry & Watch Show and the IWJG Show, we were able to sneak in some time at the JA Summer Show.  Lucky us, we’ll have a sneak peak at the up and coming hottest trends in jewelry, and be able to say a quick hello to some vendors we’ve worked with in the past.

Of the jewelry designers featured in the article,G & G Creations stood out with some of the most incredible approaches to jewelry design that I’d ever seen. In fact, I’ve written fan mail already…

With a combined seven decades of experience in jewelry design and manufacturing, the newly formed Boston-based G&G Creations is a force to be reckoned with. In 2010, Vahe Ghazarian and Esin Guler and master gem setter Mihran Guler banded together to launch G&G Creations, a fabricator of high-end silver and karat gold designs.

Collections to date total four: Imprint features organic-looking lily pad shapes; Scroll features timeless swirl effects; Nyx, named for the Greek goddess of the night, showcases contrasting dark and light motifs (like skulls set with yellow gold accents); Faith pieces pay homage to religion. Couture or one-off pieces are also available.

We have received word from the Raymond Lee Jewelers crew currently across the world, exhibiting at the June Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair 2011, the largest jewelry trade show in Asia.  Thanks to a few great bosses who took the time to keep us up in the loop checked in with us back here in The States with notations of observation on the unfolding trade show action, I have my hands on some very interesting  information and illustrious images of the June Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair 2011.

On this 23rd day of June, I am pleased to present you with with the following installment of jewelry industry trade show. . .

‘Rapid Reporting‘  .  by  .  Raymond Lee Jewelers 

There has been a buzz making its way through the jewelry industry in regard to an increased demand for antique jewelry. The proof of that surge was exposed on the first day of the June Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair 2011, as the antique jewelry section of the exhibition venue has doubled in size since last year.

I was informed that UBM had to split exhibitors of antique jewelry into two floors, in order to provide sufficient display and browsing room for both exhibitors and attendees of the show with a fixed focus on antique jewelry.

As reported by the Diamond News Center in Israel:

‘Hong Kong June Expo Sees Record Number of Visitors on Opening Day’

“The June Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair opened Thursday to record numbers of both visitors and exhibitors. Registration lines were longer than expected because of the high demand.”

“The exhibition’s organizers are pleased with this year’s show and say that it is hosting over 1,500 exhibitors from 37 countries, a 20% increase over last year.”

Although the June fair is smaller than the one in September, its strengths lie in the fact that the September Fair sales already start in June. In 2010 AWDC set up a group pavilion of over 500 m² and 41 exhibitors.
