Five Fake Rolex Red Flags: Don’t be Fooled by a Faux

Don’t be Fooled by a Faux: A Genuine Rolex Watch Reference

With the value of Rolex watches holding strong in the financial field, we have seen a corresponding spiked increase in the manufacturing of Rolex replica watches. Not only has the genuine Rolex timepiece held its financial integrity, the Rolex name itself has become synonymous with style, precision and status. Over a century’s worth of extraordinary efforts and successes in award-winning engineering, technical breakthroughs and research implementation have made the Rolex wristwatch one of the most desired timepieces world-wide.

There are no shortage of reasons as to why the production of Rolex replicas, knock-offs and fakes continue. Many of us have fawned over the incredible creations of genuine Rolex watches, admiring the exquisite design and unique attributes. The impressive nature of a genuine Rolex watch is undeniable. Even now, twenty years later, I can remember studying the Rolex Presidential Watch that my Grandfather was given when he retired from Grumman. As an Engineer, he cherished every groove and mechanism that composed the 18k gold gift.

There was a level of integrity in every aspect of that genuine Rolex watch he wore. Not only was it a symbol of a man who had been a dedicated and honorable engineer for over twenty years, but also representative in its exquisite precision and crafted glory of the high regard that Grumman had for his work. In retrospect, that watch was the embodiment that everything genuine Rolex watches represent. Quality. Integrity. Style.

With a plethora of fake Rolex watches being sold every day, it’s difficult to deny the extreme level of irony. With a genuine Rolex being known for its intelligent design and craftsmanship, what would a Rolex knock-off be representative of? Just a thought…

Now, About Those Five Red Flags…

The best armor we can offer you to ensure a victory, should you find yourself in a battle with these productions of timepiece trickery, are the following 5 signs. Guarded with this knowledge, hopefully we can help our visitors avoid being fooled by a faux Rolex watch. Keep in mind that every model Rolex has varying distinctions of design, and therefore each replica will have separate elements that will mark it’s lack of authenticity.

For example, the Rolex DateJust replica models often have a distinctively low-quality clasp of the bracelet. Many DateJust replica’s are also manufactured with a clear back casing, exposing the mechanical components of the watch. This is the marking of a fake.

1. Genuine Rolex Watches will not have clear case backings, or skeleton casing, on any production model watch.

*(There are only 2 “known” examples of Rolex watches with glass “exhibition backs”, and they are both vintage manual wind models from the 1930s, and they were not “production” models.)*

2. Genuine Rolex Watches will have a serial and case reference number that can be found between the lugs, engraved on the side of the case.

The thin, fine lines are almost diamond-cut in appearance with these engraved numbers on a Genuine Rolex Watch. A replica will appear sand-blasted and have much less space between the etched numbers.

*(Many replica’s will be sporting the same fake serial number: “R863698”)*

3. Genuine Rolex Watches second hands will have a smooth and continuous movement. This element cannot be mimicked, though fake’s definitely try. If there are any jerking movements of the second hand, you are probably holding a replica.

4. Genuine Rolex Watches (since 2002) do not leave the factory without a 3-dimensional hologram encoded sticker on the caseback. Some replica models have tried to re-create the hologram, but the display remains the same when viewed from various angles (a tell-tale sign of a fake).

5. Genuine Rolex Watches ( Submariner, Sea-Dweller and Daytona Models) feature a ‘Triplock crown.” This authentic mark is identified by 3 tiny dots located underneath the engraved trademark “crown” logo at the winding crown end, viewable only when the winding crown is fully unscrewed.

These 5 red flags should definitely help you out when faced with the possible presence of a phony Rolex watch. Keep in mind that most things seemingly too good to be true usually are. Additionally, if there is a specific Rolex model that you are interested in, do a bit of research on the known signs of replica attributes that have been associated with that model Rolex. Purchase your Genuine Rolex Watch from a trusted, reputable dealer (i.e. Raymond Lee Jewelers).

Rolex Watches: Time to Invest

Exquisite Timepieces.. Ahead of Their Time

Rolex watches have been an icon of ingenuity, precision and craftsmanship since the early 1900’s. It was over a hundred years ago that Rolex wristwatches designated the ultimate compass of quality and design in timepieces. Over a century of accomplishment and innovation by Rolex watch designs include chronometer certification, self-winding mechanisms, automatic time calibration and quartz movement. A name synonymous with luxury and precision, Rolex is the largest single luxury watch brand and among the 100 most valuable global brands.

Rolex Deep Sea

Founded in 1905, “Wilsdorf and Davis” began manufacturing and distributing wristwatches to jewelers in surrounding areas of London. Hans Wilsdorf and brother-in-law, Alfred Davis officially changed the trademark to “Rolex” in 1908 and opened an office in Switzerland. Rolex received the first ever Official Chronometer Certification to be awarded to a wristwatch just two years later. Becoming the first in 1910, Rolex remains the record holder today for most certified chronometer movements in wristwatches.

Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis continued breaking records with the exceptional precision of Rolex wristwatches, awarded with a Class “A” precision certificate in 1914 from The Kew Observatory in Great Britain. The flawless designs of remarkable engineering are seen as clearly today as they had been recognized on those infamous early decades of the 20th century. Rolex wristwatches are certainly standing the test of time, with continued innovation and impeccable quality.

A previously-owned Rolex watch has been revered and suggested as one of the wisest investment choices in both England and America. With retail prices for brand new models rising, there has been an increased popularity and availability of previously-owned Rolex watches. Rolex watches, particularly GMT-Master, Daytona and Submariner models have proven to maintain, and often rise in value over time.

Rolex Wristwatch

As consumers, we may never see a more fitting time to invest in a classic timepiece by Rolex. With jewelry retailers offering previously-owned Rolex watches with CW21 certification at remarkably affordable rates, it is undoubtedly time (no pun intended) to invest in a previously-owned luxury Rolex watch. The time to invest in a Rolex is at an all time high for luxury previously owned models. Raymond Lee Jewelers prides itself in being an industry leader in luxury pre-owned watches.  Located in the heart of Boca Raton, Florida, Raymond Lee Jewelers can offer the best value high end watches on the web.

Whether purchased for a loved one (this includes you), or for future use as a family keepsake, there has never been a better time to invest in a previously-owned Rolex wristwatch. As the ultimate emblem of innovation, accomplishment and cultural heritage, a previously-owned Rolex watch is not only a wise investment, but a sentimental and symbolic one as well.

The Most Wanted Rolex Presidents- Watch Repair

Rolex Super President

Rolex is one of the top brands in the luxury watch market and is known for their exceptional quality.  One of Rolex’s most popular models is the President or Day-Date; popularized by both politicians and movie stars, the President has become a symbol of wealth and power. The President has undergone only slight changed over the years. The  hack feature was introduced which allowed the second hand to be stopped instantly. Another feature that was added over the years was the “Quickset” feature, this allowed the wearer to change the date by pulling the button out half way and turning it. A great improvement over the old method where the crown would have to be turned round and round in order to manipulate the date.  Besides these internal changes the President is still holds the classic beauty that originally made it a hit among consumers. Raymond Lee Jewelers has always had a hard time keeping our Rolex President in stock especially since our Rolexs on sale are far below their retail value. Here are the top five most popular Rolex President models:

2. Men’s champagne dial Rolex Day Date President
3. Men’s champagne stick dial Rolex Day Date President
4. Ladies champagne dial Rolex Super President

The Extremely Rare Patek Philippe Advanced Research- Watch Sell

Watch Sell

Watch Sell

I have done many posts regarding luxury watches in the past; many of the watches I cover such as the Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster or Breitling Chronomat cost $5,500 to $10,000 new. One type of watch that I have only touched upon but really have not covered are the super-luxury watches which often start at $75,000 and can climb up to $200,000. These tend to derive their high price from their extremely precise movements, which are seen by some as works of art. These type of super-luxury watches are crafted painstakingly by hand, have impeccable craftsmanship and many times are not adorned with diamonds or gems.

One such super-luxury watch is the Patek Philippe Advanced Research 5250, this is truly a work of art. Blending spectacular artistry and technical innovation, this watch was a very limited production with only 100 ever being made. In 2005 Patek Philippe was testing out a revolutionary escape wheel (the part of a watch’s movement where the timekeeping element is derived from) that was made from Silicium, the first time this material was placed in a watch. Silicium is anti-magnetic, super-smooth, nearly twice as hard as steel, three times lighter and highly corrosion resistant. What makes this material even more amazing is the fact that the faces of the Silicium wheel never need to be lubricated. This was a very experimental watch for Patek Philippe and an internal decision was made to only release a “test run” of 100 pieces. Watch Sell.

Patek Philippe has released newer models that have incorporated and refined this technology, such as Ref. 5350 and Ref. 5450. But for collectors those 100 originals are highly sought after pieces and part of watch history. The Advanced Research 5250 is currently estimated to be worth $120,000.

President Obama’s Watches: Part 1- Jewelry Appraisal

Jewelry Appraisal

Barack's TAG-Heur

In the past we have covered the watches of various celebrities such Kanye West’s amazing Black PVD coated Rolex Submariner but have only briefly touched upon the watches of politicians. Today I wanted to focus on one of the most popular or polarizing (depending on which side of the aisle your on) politicians in American history, President Barack Obama. Our 44th President is known for wearing two watches, in this post I am going to cover the watch he wore as a senator and while campaigning.

In late 2007 when then Senator Obama was blazing across America on his campaign trail, many watch enthusiasts where speculating about the watch on his wrist. The flash of leather under a cuff or a glimpse of a large silver case got many thinking our future president was sporting a Paneria or even a Carrera. In actuality Barack Obama was wearing a TAG-Heur Series 1500 Two-Tone Diver on a brown leather strap.  I could not not find out whether President Obama purchased this watch himself or it was a gift but he has wearing this watch daily since 1991. Jewelry appraisal.

The TAG-Heur Series 1500 was released in 1991 as a cheaper alternative to more expensive models; and was a designed to have a bold, professional look without sacrificing its ability to be used as a diving piece. With a water resistance of 200 meters, a screw-down crown, plain white dial and  heavy duty full size case this timepiece would make a exceptional diving watch. The watch was released with a price tag of $575 with the leather strap. If you are looking to purchase this exact model you are out of luck as TAG has ceased production in 1998.

I think this is the perfect type of watch for a politician to wear, it is moderately priced so not to seem too flashy or elitist. Also I like that President Obama did not follow the traditional politician route and wear a cheap Casio or Timex to “connect” with Joe the plumber. The TAG with its raised gold triangles on the bezel make this watch look much more luxurious than it actually is.

Check back later for my the part two where I will discuss President Obama’s current watch.

Kanye West Rolex Submariner: Preowned Luxury Watches

Preowned Luxury Watches

Kanye West is on fire with his latest album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”.  His new music is sweeping the country and critics are calling this his best album yet.

Since Kanye has been in the news so much lately it reminded me of a GQ article I read last year.  They have a a section in their magazine every once in a while where they ask a celebrity their 10 best fashion items.  One that stood out for me was Kanye’s blacked out PVD coating Rolex Submariner.

In the preowned luxury watches business it is unusual to personalize a high end watch as most of the time it ruins the residual value of the timepiece.  However, as a fashion item, the blacked out Rolex Submariner is actually selling for more than the regular version (even though the black coating is aftermarket).

Mr. West has his on a black military strap and the case is all black instead of the normal stainless steel color.  It has a really hip look.  Kanye said, “It looks hard—it looks really cool. It’s a new take on a classic watch.”

While personalizing a watch like this may ruin its value in the long run, the demand for black PVD coating on preowned luxury watches has never been higher.  If you want to be fashion forward get yourself an all black preowned luxury watches.

James Bond Watches Part 3: Gadget Watch- Watch Sell

Watch Sell

Rolex Buzzsaw Watch

Pierce Brosnan’s last film as bond was Die Another Day in 2002, he was well into his late forties and it was decided that a younger actor should portray Bond in the next series of films. The Bond series would spend four years on hiatus and the next film in the series would be a startling departure from the CGI laden and formulaic movies of the past. Casino Royal was released in 2006 with blond haired Daniel Craig portraying James Bond. The new film was more realistic, darker and  featured few gadgets. Craig’s Bond still retained an impeccable sense of style but was more rugged then Bonds of the past.

This new bond needed a watch that was both masculine and elegant, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean model 2900.50.91 was chosen. The Planet Ocean has a diameter of 45.5 mm and was on a sporty black rubber band with a black dial. This was the first time an Omega watch was shown in a Bond film with a black dial, all other Omegas had a blue dial. Later in the film Bond is shown wearing a Coaxial version of Omega Seamaster Professional with a blue dial model 222.80.00. In Quantum of Solace, James Bond only wears a Seamaster Planet Ocean 600 M  model 2201.50.00 with  Coaxial technology, black dial and a stainless steel strap.

Bond’s various watches were not always just a stylish accessory, many watches were issued through Q-Branch and were modified with different gadgets. Here are some of the most notable gadget watches in order of appearance:

-From Russia With Love (1963): The first gadget watch sell to be featured in a film belonged to the villain. This ordinary looking wrist watch with a brown leather strap had a small crown, when pulled, a long steel wire would retract like a tape measure which could be used as a garrote.

-Thunderball (1965): This movie featured a Breitling ‘Top Time’ Diver Chrono with a working Geiger Counter.

-Live and Let Die (19730: A Rolex Submariner had an incredible strong electromagnet that could deflect a bullet. It also had a spinning bezel that could act as a small rotating saw.

-Moonraker (1979): A Seiko m354 Memory Bank Wristwatch that had a removable case back which housed a powerful explosive charge and denotation wire.

-For Your Eyes Only (1981): Seiko H357 Analog Digital Display watch with a built-in satellite phone to receive calls direct from MI6 and the ability to display messages on its digital display.

GoldenEye (1995): Omega Seamaster that had a powerful laser which could cut through welded medal.

The World Is Not Enough (1999): Omega Seamaster with a miniature grappling hook which includes a 50 foot high tensile micro filament, able to support 800 pounds.

James Bond Watches Part 1: Rolex- Watch Sell

Watch Sell

Watch Sell

The character James Bond 007 was created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming. A suave and sophisticated secret agent with a penchant for woman, danger and gadgets. James Bond had a classic sense of style that many have come to admire and emulate over the years. Perhaps the most revered aspect of Bond’s style are the watches he wears on his wrist. Many of which Raymond Lee Jewelers has for sale.

The first watch sell to be worn by James Bond on the big screen was the Rolex Submariner 6538A. Worn by Sean Connery in the film Dr. No, this watch would become the signature Bond watch for the next decade and considered by many collectors to be the only true James Bond Submariner. Nine films would put Rolex in the spotlight, with different variations of the Submariner being used throughout filming. The 6200 with its larger winding crown and non-crown guard case is also considered a collectors item.

Sean Connery played the role of James Bond for five films and then George Lazenby took over the role for the sixth film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Sean Connery returned to the role of Bond in Diamonds Are Forever in which Bond had a Submariner Date. Roger Moore who played Bond for the 8th film Live and Let Die (1973) wore a slightly different Rolex, the 5513.

For more then a decade the Rolex would not be featured in a Bond film, instead the secret agent was sporting Seiko digital or digital/analogue hybrids. This move to digitization like many of the trends that swept the 80’s was soon forgotten and hopefully will never be reprised. Bond was back to sporting the beautiful and timeless Submariner in The Living Daylights (1987) and License to Kill (1989).

Stay tuned for Part 2!

New Rolex Submariner 116610

New Rolex Submariner 116610

As Rolex continues to be a global leader in luxury watches, they keep making additions to some of their classic watches.  This year they introduced a 41mm Day-Date and Datejust to keep up with the growing trend for “big” watches and also introduced a new Rolex Submariner 116610.  It has been over 20 years since Rolex has changed the Submariner’s design.

The first change of note is the new 116610 model number.  In more recent years it has been 16610 and before that 1680.   This means the changes in the new Submariner were drastic enough to warrant a new and different model number.

Some new features of the 116610 include wider lugs, larger crown guards, a ceramic bezel, and bigger hour markers.  The wider lugs are surprisingly more noticeable than I thought they would be.  Looking at pictures, I never even noticed a change, but now that I have seen it in person it stands out.  The lugs give the Submariner a bigger look that people are seeking.

Like the lugs, the crown guards are also significantly larger than the 16610 model.  Again, pictures do not show the full extent of the increase in size; it is much easier to notice in person.

The ceramic bezel, or what Rolex calls the Cerachrom bezel, is an addition everyone was waiting for.  The GMT-Master II already made this jump to the new bezel and the public seem to like it.

The new hour markers on the New Rolex Submariner 116610 were necessary because of the additions of the larger lugs and crown guards.  In order to keep the symmetry of the design it made sense to increase the size of the markers.

The new Sub still has a 40mm case which it has had since its introduction.  The retail value jumped significantly from $6,000 for the 16610 to $7,375 for the new 116610.  As expected it is still pressure-proof for 1,000 feet under water.

With all the new designs for the New Rolex Submariner 116610 it still has that classic Submariner look.  It is a great gents every day watch that can also be worn dressed up.

Chanel – J12 Marine

Chanel J12 Marine

Chanel J12 Marine

2010 has seen its fair share of new watches.  One of the most highly anticipated this year is the Chanel J12 Marine.  After creating a lot of buzz at this year’s Baselworld exposition, the J12 Marine has made quite a “splash”.   The new J12 Marine has the same water resistance as the Rolex Submariner (300m).

The Marine comes in four different models: blue in both 42 and 38 mm, black in 42 mm, and white in 38 mm.  On all models the case is made from sand-blasted high-tech ceramic and steel.  The stainless steel bezel is unidirectional rotating with hour markers to time the climb back to the surface when diving.  The crystal is scratch resistant sapphire and has anti glare coating.  The dial has luminescent hands and markers for easy reading in the dark.  The automatic self-winding movement has a power reserve of 42 hours.  Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, and date.  The strap is rubber with openings to allow water to escape.

This is a true diving watch.  There are only a few watches with the water resistance for 300 meters (1000 feet).  The J12 Marine style keeps to the same styling as the normal J12.  This is the 10th anniversary of the J12 and what better way to celebrate the success of the J12 then to introduce the J12 Marine?  Chanel has made stunning and functional watches for years and the tradition continues with the J12 Marine.
