Key Trends from The Knot & WeddingChannel.com’s Bridal Jewelry Study

engagement statistics, average cost of engagement ring, raymond lee jewelers

Stats via MarketWatch.com

Yesterday, TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com released the results of its Engagement & Jewelry Study, which surveyed more than 10,000 U.S. brides and 1,000 U.S. grooms engaged or married in the past year. This study is the most comprehensive survey of wedding jewelry purchases, and shows some clear trends for 2011 – Raymond Lee Jewelers breaks it down.

Most Grooms Aren’t Basing Their Budget on the Economy

With the economy making a measly recovery (on a good day) one would think that engagement ring sales would have taken a big hit, but grooms aren’t skimping on the most important purchase of their lives. Only 14% of men said that they had purchased a less expensive ring due to the shaky economy. The average cost of an engagement ring is around $5200, down only $600 from 3 years ago, while the luxury engagement ring segment spends an average of $13,500.

Round Rings Rule

Rounds remain the most popular choice for engagement rings with 53% of brides opting for a round diamond. The luxury segment prefers rounds even more, with 57% of luxury engagement rings featuring round diamonds. And while princess remains the next most popular cut, cushion cut diamonds are trending for both the typical engagement segment and luxury segment.

Among the Luxury Segment, Tradition is Tops

Perhaps the reason that rounds shine brighter among the luxury segment is their classic shape. Also, luxury engagement rings feature larger center stones and might only require one large, solitaire round to make a statement. Another tradition among those who live luxe? Grooms asking the bride’s father for permission – a whopping 80% of them asked Pops before popping the question. One tradition that spans across both segments? Getting down on bended-knee: 77% of grooms opted for this.

Uniqueness is Prized

Grooms are choosing to add personal elements to pre-existing ring designs or to commission original designs. 41% of grooms, and 59% of grooms within the luxury segment, are adding to or creating new designs. Additionally, while white gold remains the most popular metal, grooms are favoring metals like tungsten and titanium in their rings.

Grooms are Sticking to Brick and Mortar Stores

Only 9% of grooms purchased their rings from online retailers, while 35% of them bought the ring at a national jewelry chain. Local and independent jewelers, like Raymond Lee Jewelers, accounted for 39% of all groom’s engagement ring purchases. And regardless of the name on the receipt, brides are gently nudging their beloveds towards “The One”, with 65% admitting to being “somewhat involved” and 31% “very involved.”

Jewelers, what kinds of trends have you noticed in engagement and wedding jewelry sales? Brides & Grooms, share with us your purchasing process in the comments below.

Jewelry Education: HOW TO SELL OR BUY JEWELRY

“WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW

ABOUT JEWELRY

when I go to sell or buy it?”

Good question!

Florida Jewelry Store

POINTERS TO HELP YOU SELL OR BUY JEWELRY

Here’s a quick checklist of knowledge you should have before you go shopping for expensive jewelry.

  1. What is a Karat? It’s a good idea to know that gold karat number varies with weight, design, finishing and country of origin. Finishing can be done by hand or by machine, and this makes a difference. 24 karat gold, or pure gold, is too soft for molding into wearable jewelry, thus it needs to be mixed with other metals to strengthen it. The metal used to mix into the gold can change its color. WHAT TO KNOW if it’s less than 10kt (roughly 42% gold), than it can’t be sold as gold legally. You’ll hear these terms: “fill”, “electroplated” or “overlay” and that means it just has a thin gold coat on the piece of jewelry.
  2. What are the four C’s? Don’t expect to read this and have a working knowledge of the four C’s, but I can at least acquaint you with the language. WHAT TO KNOW – the four C’s are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat. If a jeweler can’t discuss these in great detail, they don’t know enough to be selling you jewelry, keep shopping.
  3. Be aware of chain stores who employ retail sales clerks AND have no actual jewelers on staff. WHAT TO KNOW  – Local jewelers will almost always have a more educated and knowledgeable staff.
  4. If you are going to purchase a really expensive piece of jewelry, USE A MAJOR CREDIT CARD AND HAVE IT APPRAISED immediately.

Now, you officially know more than most people about jewelry shopping! Enjoy ~

Kat Von D ‘Too Much Drama’ Jesse James Tweets: Is The Inked Up Engagement Over?

Jesse James and Kat Von D 2011

Various reports have been published this month from People and Life & Style Magazine, with conflicting announcements about the engagement between Kat Von D and Jesse James. In fact, since we first reported the engagement back in February the media has announced several splits between the high profile couple.

Jesse James and Kat Von D are engaged, according to People.

The Engagement Ring: Kat Von D 2011

Almost five months after announcing their engagement, friends tell Life & Style magazine that James has told them the romance is over.

One insider tells the publication, “He says there’s too much drama for him.”

And the reports are supported by tweets James and his inked lady have posted on Twitter.com in the last week.

The roller coaster romance may be just fine, as both have reported separately that rumors of a split ‘couldn’t be further from the truth’ says Kat Von D and James lashes out at the trash talking tabloid rumors. The couple went on a mutually defensive strike Thursday evening, assuring the public that rumors of a split are nothing more than silly.

Now.. A bit about the JEWELRY!

Kat Von D Engagement Ring

The gorgeous vintage engagement ring that Kat has been sporting since early 2011 is a piece from Neil Lane’s archival collection. Lane was quoted earlier this year saying, “She [Kat] absolutely loved her ring.”

US Weekly reported that the ring is a 4 carat-plus platinum and diamond piece, featuring a unique filigree pattern with outer scroll designs. The center stone is surrounded by smaller diamonds, leading out to the vintage filigree pattern. The center stone is surrounded by smaller diamonds and accented by the outer delicate filigree pattern.

Kim Kardashian: Bride to Be Flaunts $2 Million Engagement Ring Designed by Lorraine Schwartz, Announces Plans To Wed Kris Humphries in Alexander McQueen

Kim Kardashian: Jewelry, Love and Fashion

Kim Kardashian in Monaco with Fiance, Kris Humphries, Flashing Her New $2 Million Engagement Ring designed by Lorraine Shwartz. Kardashian’s Engagement Ring sparkles with a 16.5-carat emerald cut center stone, flanked by a pair of 2-carat trapezoids, with a total weight of 20.5 carats.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries in Monaco

While the media isn’t giving this couple too much credibility, it seems that there are some tell tale signs that we are seeing a true love story as opposed to the claims that the Sports Star was paid to marry Kim Kardashian, or that the new Bride purchased the ring herself. (Which she could have, and more power to her just for that ability!) Kardashian never flaunted Kris Humphries around like arm candy, not was she exceedingly public with their romance or obsessed with his appearance publicly.

That shows a great deal of respect for the relationship and for Kris Humphries, as this gal is no stranger to spouting off with comments about possible suitors that may have been considered… demanding or expectant. With Kris Humphries, I see a sweeter, more genuine person in Kim Kardashian. If this relationship has brought that happiness of a content existence into the young beauties life, the tabloids may be eating some crow for proclaiming this marriage didn’t ‘stand a chance.’

Kim Kardashian Engagement Ring

Kim Kardashian‘s stunning 20.5-carat engagement ring is obviously big. It’s so big, in fact, that husband-to-be Kris Humphries was able to include several inscriptions on the inside of the sparkler. “It’s engraved, with two things from the Bible,” Humphries tells PEOPLE. “There’s one verse [Proverbs 31: 10-31] about the perfect godly woman,” he explains. “The other, [1 John 3:18] is about love. It took me … a few days to pick them out and research the perfect ones.” In the middle of the two passages is a third inscription, “K [hearts] K,”standing, of course, for Kris and Kim.

April Diamonds: The Month of Crystallized Carbon

We will soon be bidding a bitter-sweet farewell to the picnic blues and turquoise hues that symbolize the month’s gemstone. March is the month of aquamarines, celebrated with a bright variety of greenish blues and blueish greens shimmering with hints of golden colored inclusions. As the month of the aquamarine wraps up, it is time to give a warm welcome to the arrival of April.

Diamonds in Modern Brilliant Cut

Diamonds in Modern Brilliant Cut

April is the month of the Diamond. An incredible gemstone symbolic of eternal love and everlasting light, the April Diamond is invincibly strong and brilliantly stunning. Formed throughout centuries of erosion within volcanic rock, deeply embedded within the earth and crystallized through intense natural heat; Diamonds are one of the earths’ most miraculous natural creations.

In addition to being the gemstone of April, the Diamond is also well-known for being the symbol of eternal love. Just as the gemstone endured centuries of intense heat, volcanic rock, the Dark Ages, the Renaissance and even the ’80s, the gift of a diamond to the one you love represents the unbreakable bond of everlasting love.

… The crystallized carbon that evolves into diamonds …

April, we welcome you.

And your Diamonds too!

Elizabeth Taylor: A Glamorous Remembrance

Long Live Elizabeth Taylor

The Legacy of Liz: Grace, Gratitute and Glamour

The unforgettably magnetic and poised Academy Award winning Actress, Elizabeth Taylor took her final leave yesterday, March 23, 2011. Reportedly a result of congestive heart failure, Taylor passed while surrounded by her four children at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Following the tragic loss of his legendary Mother, Taylor’s Son Michael Wilding released the statement, “My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Rosemond “Liz” Taylor will be fondly remembered by her children, close friends (Elton John was among the most publically distraught over the loss of his great friend.) and in the hearts of fans world-wide for her extraordinary grace and generosity, humanitarian work and AIDS activism. With bright violet eyes and an on-screen presence that captured the hearts of film audiences, critics and eventually, eight different husbands, Liz Taylor embodied the strength, beauty and selflessness of a true icon.

We will celebrate the gift of Elizabeth Taylor‘s life in a glamorous remembrance. While the sensational actress was expressively fond of  extraordinary jewelry, diamonds and sapphires, she somehow managed to escape such claims of materialism or superficiality. As far as Hollywood is concerned, this may be the last time such a success is made. Perhaps it was her qualities of ultimate grace and sincerity that she was not made to endure the media ridicule we see today among celebrities sporting elaborate jewels.

Liz Taylor - Vanity Fair Cover

Behind her famously worn 33.19 carat Krupp Diamond ring and the 69.42 carat  Taylor-Burton Diamond, cut by Harry Winston and adorned in a diamond-dripped Cartier  necklace, lies one of the greatest love stories of the 20th century.

Twice-married husband and lover of over 20 years, Richard Burton had purchased both for his love, Miss Elizabeth Taylor. In reference to the Taylor-Burton diamond, regarded as the world’s first million-dollar diamond and often coined ‘the Taj-Mahal,’ Richard Burton publicly retorted, “I would have liked to buy her the Taj-Mahal.”

There was a genuine once-in-a-lifetime love between Burton and Taylor. Their 20-years and two marriages together were full of great challenges, turbulence, passion, jealousy and infatuation. Last year Elizabeth Taylor spoke of her relationship with Richard Burton in an interview with Vanity Fair.

Among revealing a selection of love letters she’d received from him through the years, Miss Taylor offered a glimpse into their love affair, “Richard was magnificent in every sense of the word. From those first moments in Rome [on the set of Cleopatra] we were always madly and powerfully in love.” She continued to wear the Krupp diamond ring he had given her in 1968, sporting the spectacular stone in her 2003 interview with Larry King.

Elizabeth Taylor in famous necklace, La Peregrina

In 1978, Elizabeth Taylor had the  Taylor-Burton diamond auctioned for $5,000,000, used to build a state-of-the-art hospital in Botswana, Southern Africa. Recognized for her advocacy in Aids research, Elizabeth Taylor was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1993. The American Foundation for AIDS Research, for which Taylor was a longtime advocate, made the following statement in response to the news of her death, “She leaves a monumental legacy that has improved and extended millions of lives and will enrich countless more for generations to come.”

In honorable memory, dedicate an hour or two to celebrate the iconic beauty of Miss Elizabeth Taylor. Her violet eyes are accented with Bvlgari jewelry in the 1973 film, “Ash Wednesday,” where you can catch a glimpse of her 50 carat sapphire ‘sautoir’ (necklace and pendant) and the sugarloaf sapphire ring by one of her favorite jewelry designers. Taylor wears a pair of classic natural pearl earrings in the film, also by Bvlgari. Elizabeth Taylor was also a fan of William Goldberg jewelry, discreetly known for the world’s most breathtaking diamonds.

The Academy-Award winning Actress notably enjoyed wearing her own jewels in movies, and did so more than any other actress. Read about the backlash one Director received when he tried to hault such indepence in personal appearance in Liz Taylor’s book, My Love Affair With Jewelry.”

Never quitting, Velvet decides to ride, disguised as a young man. I won’t give away the ending… Elizabeth Taylor is endearing as the dreamy-eyed, innocent, yet determined Velvet Brown. Riding as a girl, she also does many of her own riding scenes. It’s a great movie, a great family movie, and definitely a great choice for animal people and especially “horse people.” Velvet also displays the  big dreams that are often associated childhood, but combines them with hard work and undying determination, and Elizabeth Taylor gives Velvet a great human appeal.
