‘Masculine Monday’: A Day Late and a Dollar Shorts…

Colors, Textures, Patterns:

Three Essentials for Mens Shorts – Summer Fashion 2011

Men's Summer Fashion! Jun 3, 2011By Andrew Eirich

Summer is officially in full swing, especially here in the humid swamplands of South Florida. Celebration of the heat is easily found with a day on the beach or cooling off with buddies at a pool-side cook out, so you’ll get no complaints about the sunshine here. However, thick denim jeans aren’t going to keep you cool while you try to kick back.

Shorts have been big all year round for mens fashion trends this year, but the summer variations are taking a specifically textured, structured, bold appearance that is pretty righteous. The best trends in men’s shorts this Summer are defined by the presence of one to three of the following elements: texture, pattern and color.

Men’s shorts are also adopting a shorter and slimmer fit than in previous years. Not to worry, not 1988 tennis player short, but.. modernized. In the image above, courtesy of the High Gloss White fashion blog contributor and skilled photographer, Andrew Eirich presents a perfect picture of simply handsome summer shorts for men.

“…wearing an excellent pair of very worn-looking and faded H&M denim shorts along with a grey Top Man trench coat in the second shot. Also, a light-weight hooded knit jacket is best worn under the trench so you can transition through each temperature level a summer day might dish out! Grey is always a color you can feel confident in rocking because it isn’t as harsh as black, and as easy to stain as white. Best of both worlds! To make the look edgier, Mitchell has on a pair of black combat boots. You can swap these out for some slip on deck/boat shoes or mocassins depending on your mood, and your closet!”-

The idea here, gentlemen, is that you have a great deal of pliability with your summer shorts this year. Faded denim shorts with combat boots are among my favorite looks presented in this entry, but so many options are workable. Sandals, boat shoes and loafers are all types of footwear that have been seen with this new series of brighter, textured, structured shorts.

Any great tee shirt with an unlined double button blazer would look amazing with shorts, while still maintaining a confident sense of style, ready for any summer occasion. For those laid back days where worries are entirely out of site, a simple grey henley tee will keep you cool, and worn with either white or faded denim shorts, will maintain a muted pastels color scheme that is being embraced within the world of men’s fashion this summer.

Check out alternativeapparel.com for an awesome collection of Men’s Henleys.

Ok Boys, Get some shorts on and go play in the sun!

What’s that on your head?

It's a Stormy Kromer, of course.

This righteous cap is a celebratory find for the vintage look loving man! Another giveaway by the gents over there at urbangent.com is the classic early 19th century canvas visor cap, the ‘Stormy Kromer’. Named after the semi-pro baseball player and railroad engineer, George “Stormy” Kromer, this cool cap is part of the American Made Giveaway. Two classic companies have come together to offer this lifetime warranty backed cap. Kudos to Duluth Pack and Stormy Kromer.

Duluth Pack. Founded in 1882 by Camille Poirer in Duluth, Minnesota. In the 1870s Camille started a small shoe store, then in 1882 filed for a patent on a new type of “packsack.” It was a canvas sack, that closed with a buckled flap, had shoulder straps and other new features. It was known as the Poirer Pack, and is now called the original Duluth Pack.

Stormy Kromer. George “Stormy” Kromer was a real guy – a semi-pro baseball player and railroad engineer. Not the kind of guy you’d expect to start a clothing company, in other words, but one who happened to create a cap that became known for long-comfort and the ability to stay snug, even in the fiercest winds.

One day George “Stormy” Kromer asked his wife Ida, who was a naturally talented seamstress to fashion him a modified version of his baseball cap that would help to keep him warm when working on the railroads in cold weather. It was in 1903 that Ida created the first all cloth, six panel fitting hat that would keep George warm on the chilliest of nights. The comfortable fit and stay-put element of the modified baseball cap was such a hit with other railroad workers that Ida had to hire a few employees to keep up manufacturing the head warming sensations. ‘Stormy Kromer‘ was born!

Masculine Monday: ‘Grungy Gentleman’, ‘Tucked’ and ‘Bonobos’ Giving Men’s Fashion Reasons to Celebrate

On This Fine Day, We Give Thanks To Combat Boots, Trousers with a Cool Color Boost,

and Successful Subtle Sarcasm of Formal Wear achieved by the designs of Bonobos!

'Tucked' Q&A Series with 'Bonobos' Fashion Line

Grungy Gentleman Combat Boots of Perfection!

Tucked.. with a cool color boost to love!

To disassemble the who’s who between these male-geared virtual publications was a bit treacherous at first, I must admit.  It seems that ‘Tucked, LLC‘ has much admiration for ‘Bonobos’, both of which are warmly welcomed by the Grungy Gentleman Blog, a creation of the virtually mysterious Jace Lipstein.

Upon entrance of the Grungy Gentleman Blog, there is an open door to a Singer22.com, (aka ‘S22 Man‘), which just so happens to feature some awesome fashions for color lovin’ gals, like myself!  To see these, and I recommend highly you do so, or at least forward the following URL to your girlfriend/wife/insert affiliation here: http://www.singer22.com/blog/

To provide some clarity to the domain clutter, it ultimately isn’t clutter at all. It is a complex example of proper Blog Etiquette. Mutual  admiration in publications to peers and inspirations. It has now become clear that Jon Singer, Founder of Singer 22, which is taking off in the Men’s Fashion Industry, had been interviewed by Grungy Gentleman. The interview, of which, was featured on the Tucked Blog.

(For complete interview, please  visit URL: http://www.grungygentleman.com/2011/05/q-with-jon-singer-founder-of-singer22.html)

SINGER22 is emerging as a force in the industry. With additional retail locations on the horizon, the launch of menswear, and celebrity appearances, SINGER22 has created quite the buzz. Their growth and success starts and ends with the guy in charge, Jon Singer.

Grungy Gentleman sits down with Mr. SINGER 22, Jon Singer…

Now that we have that a bit cleared up… The point was ultimately to say a sincere Thank You to these Fashion-Gents.

The combat boots featured in Grungy Gentleman are totally awesome, not overpriced and not outlandish in appearance either. They walk the perfect line of ‘in-style’ and ‘not trying at all’. This is a hard look to pull of successfully, and these boots will answer the prayers of many, including myself if they’re available in a Men’s size 4, which I’ve already inquired upon 🙂

THE BOOTS 🙂

Secondly, to Tucked LLC, you rock dude! This blog has numerous tips and awesome images to help convey completely what a man that looks well dressed without looking primped should appear like. In real life. With stylish approaches that inch toward, but never jump off the bridge, like ’30s inspired cuffed up pant legs, wool vests, green trousers and suspenders, that all work in the creation of Tucked, I am in an awe-inspired thanks. He describes his ensembles much better than I should attempt, and if you’re interested in looking this smooth, take a gander into the mind of Tucked…

And lastly, the sneaky sarcasm of the dress pants. I can’t help but find that humor in formal menswear deserves some sort of applause or a treat of some kind. Bonobos CEO Andy Dunn began his successful men’s fashion venture with hopes to catering to the comfortable fit of stylish menswear. Bravo, Mr. Dunn. And then some. A few key pieces from this line that are infectiously lovable include items such as the Graham Slackers and the Banshees, in addition to more obvious favorite picks like the Mint Juleps!

Graham Slackers

Mint Juleps by Bonobos

Bonobos Bashees

As explained by ‘Ninja Dan’:

To be refined takes a little more effort, but you don’t want to overdo it and become boring and stuffy. The Banshees create a look that is at once both simple and exuberant. On the outside, they are fine-cut black wool pants: spartan and appropriate. On the inside, they are vibrant, playful, and rebellious. So while you may be in middle management and have daily meetings about corporate synergy, you can always rock the Banshees and know you’re the cock of the walk. – Ninja Dan

What a marvelous Monday for Masculine Fashion Finds! These sure fire ensembles, tips and approaches to looking great without it seeming like you spent a great deal of time in preparation… is the answer to any man’s ‘looking great.’ I hope these resources help, here’s wishing all our cherished gentlemen a happy week and a marvelously Masculine Monday.

Thanks For Stopping By,

Masculine Monday: We Haven’t Forgotten About the Rocker Boys!

With so much focus recently being given towards the renewed sense of classic men’s fashion making a strong and steady comeback, certainly didn’t  want to give the impression that we’ve forgotten the pathfinders (or path makers, rather) in men’s style… The Musicians.

Rock Stars will simply never go out of style. They’ve always been there, and so long as the tide keeps turning, there they will remain…

Bob Dylan

Men like Robert Plant, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Kurt Cobain and Jack White, who make their own place in fashion history by creating their own personal and powerful style distinctions… Wearing them with the pride and swagger that belongs only to Rock Stars.

Not only are Rockers adored for their fashion risks, but applauded for just how well they seem to work, no matter how bizarre. ‘80s Rock Band Poison created a fashion sensation among fellow artists and fans with the bright purple leggings worn by guitarist C.C. Deville and front man, Bret Michaels.

And don’t laugh, ladies.. I know a good few of you sent in audition tapes to Rock of Love. One, Two, and THREE!

(It’s alright. So did I…)

Women love musicians. Is it a cliché?  Yes. It is also an inarguable truth.

Kate Hudson is pregnant, and happily engaged to Rocker Matt Bellamy, front-man of Muse. The charming and talented daughter of Goldie Hawn has had a magnetic pull towards musicians throughout her love life, but this Penny Lane finally seems to have found her soul mate in Bellamy.

Kate looks absolutely stunning in every recent photograph, beaming with happiness and excitement to begin their life together as a Family.

Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy

Another gorgeous Actress who has fallen under the spell of a musician is the lovely Kiera Knightley. Rumors of a blooming relationship between Knightley and James Righton, keyboard player for rock band Klaxons, have been confirmed recently through very telling images.

These two coordinating cuties were introduced through mutual friend, Alexa Chung about five weeks ago.

What’s becoming so likeable about the new Rocker Boy fashions is the mild approach to daily ensembles, a casual appearance that has been taking a backseat to way-too-tight pants and super long locks for the past few years.

With a solid pair of charcoal or black sneakers, a plain white tee, some worn jeans and charismatic sunglasses, Rocker Boy’s today are looking ultra adorable in their casual wear. Their Leading Ladies seem to love it too…

So, a few tips on obtaining the simplified Rock Star Style that is capturing hearts from here to England:

Understated, and Making a Statement: The Long Sleeved White Tee

Many of us forget about the long-sleeve lightweight tee. This doesn’t have to be just an undershirt. It looks great by itself, especially highlighted with a great accessory (i.e. watch, bracelet, etc.). Some slick linen pants and sandals would also be right at home with this one – $19 at 80sPurple.com

Men’s Shirts: Patch tees and men’s button down shirts can take a guy from organization casual to rocker on the prowl. Men’s shirt brands like English Laundry, Local Celebrity and Suitable English all offer you wonderful men’s t-shirt styles.

Outerwear and Accessories: Jackets with hand made patchwork, Heirloom buckled belts, simple fashions that exhibit a vintage appeal such as old-fashioned bomber jackets and leather strapped wristwatches will help to achieve the kicked-back Rocker look.

A New Spin on Classic Khaki’s

Khaki’s are making a substantial evolution in men’s fashion.  These summer staples are a beautiful way to maintain a crisp look for the bottom half – Men’s Long Beach pants – $109 at  80spurple.com.

Simple Kicks

Sneakers that are basic in color and fit, absent of any bright accents are a fantastic feature of any laid-back rock star style. These white and grey simple kicks are sure to be a hit on any pair of feet, whether or not they’ll be kicking drum pedals by the end of the night.   $83.95 at Zappos.com

Stylist Manifesto: Sometimes the most appropriate way to go is minimalist. From shoes to accessories, tops to bottoms, there are times when simplicity works best.

So, there you have it fellas. Get the appeal of a rock star, whether you’re a musician, banker or athlete. The attraction of the rocker boy fashion is all in how you wear it. So slip on a pair of casual kicks and a plain white tee. Pair it up with a vintage wristwatch, some charismatic shades, and before you know it…

The Keira Knightley or Kate Hudson you’ve been waiting for will be walking your way!

Masculine Monday: Water for Elephants Style Vests, Sweaters and Suits

Masculine Monday: Channeling the 1930’s

Hyper Smash

1930’s Men’s Fashion: Water for Elephants

There were many US designers that made their mark in fashion during the 1930s. It comes as no surprise that the eye of fashion has happily revisited and revived this exciting era of new fabrics, textures, colors and trends. While the Nation was experiencing the most economically challenging times yet, there is an obvious showing that even in the darkest of times, creativity will find a way to bring hope to the masses.
During this first third of the 20th Century, Men’s fashion became more daring and colorful than ever before. Perhaps the introduction of new fabrics, cuts and cheerful color palettes aided in some way to distract from the fact that we were in the middle of a Great DepressionWith money and job opportunities scarce, the uncertainty of our future as a Country was at an all time high. In some regard however, this helped open a whole new world of fashion possibilities.
Elsa Schiaparelli was perhaps the most well-known Italian Designer during this time, greatly known for her creative work and ingenuity by using fashion as a distinct form of artistic expression. Unwilling to cut down on manufacturing costs and the changing fashion that came with WWII, Schiaparelli’s business was closed in 1954.
Schiaparelli-Shoe-hat-with-mannequin-1937

Elsa Schiaparelli remains one of the most influential and theatrical Fashion Designers in history, having collaborated with Surrealism Artist Salvador Dalí in the design of the infamous ‘shoe hat’ circa 1933, as well as creating the wardrobes for over thirty films. Her wardrobe successes include 1933’s Topaze, the outfits worn by Zsa Zsa Gabor in the 1952 production of Moulin Rouge, and with the help of a mannequin proportional to her measurements, Schiaparelli famously dressed Mae West for the 1937 film, Every Day’s a Holiday. She was also responsible for the Tromp L’oeil scarf first ordered by Lord and Taylor, and featured in Vogue.

30's Inspired-Looks Making a Strong Return

Coco Chanel has been one of the most innovative Designers of men’s fashion. It was in the ’30s when Chanel‘s signature color pairings of navy and white, beige and black, and burgundy and white were first introduced. She became recognized mostly for using the economic downturn to her advantage during this decade.

As baseball and Jazz music began inspiring men’s fashion, Coco Chanel began to incorporate the use of jersey fabrics into her menswear. The comfortable and durable fabric had become less expensive to produce in the US., and Chanel began designing men’s garments infused with daring new color pairings and a heightened use of  jersey material.

Mens 3 Piece Suits

Men’s fashion in the 1930’s introduced never before seen fabrics, colors and accessories worn by men. Many attribute this surge to the short, baggy knee length trousers worn by Edward the III, later dubbed as “Plus Fours.” This unusual  piece became a popular item among men in the ’30s, often worn with a round-necked schoolboy sweater.

Both men and boys began to wear full three-pieced suits, designed to broaden the shoulders and elongate the body for a more masculine appearance. This was also the reason for the v-shaped vest worn under the newly introduced double breasted jacket, a jacket design which is just as popular today as it was upon it’s introduction during the ’30s.

As you can see by the wardrobe ensembles of the men in Water for Elephants, this is also the first time in history when accessories became an integral part to a man’s ensemble. A hat of some kind was worn nearly all the time, and the introduction of the fedora was happily accepted by men of all social classes. Neck ties and pocket handkerchiefs became more popular than ever before, as men seemed to adopt the notion that their ensemble was a direct reflection of their character and level of social etiquette.

The Return of the 3-Piece Suit

Along with suede dress shoes, classy fedora styles, three-piece tailored suits and raincoat’s, expect to see many other men’s fashion revivals from the 1930’s. Among these stylish returns are the tie clip, handkerchief, men’s gloves and schoolboy sweaters.
