Feature Friday: Rare Alexandrite Ring

Feature Friday: Alexandrite & Diamond Dome Ring

Alexandrite is one of the most magnificent and mysterious gemstones you will ever see. Though the gemstone itself was discovered less than 200 years ago, the unique color changing and reflective elements of alexandrite have received a great deal of attention and adoration. The stone’s existence itself is a phenomenon. Natural Alexandrite gemstones are an incredibly rare find. Two chemical elements which are scientifically constructed to avoid interaction with one another, chromium and beryllium, found a way to bypass this rule millions of years ago, in what would be considered a metamorphic atmosphere.

Discovered in 1830, Russia, the day when Tsar Alexander II was the appropriate age to rule,

legend has it that Alexandrite was named after royalty.

My first Alexandrite ring was a gift from my Dad for my 7th Birthday, a claddagh ring with an Alexandrite gemstone held in the hands. Alexandrite, at the time, was still the official June Birthstone. Unfortunately, things have changed. With the increasing value and rarity of natural Alexandrite, pearls are now the ‘official’ (the waters there are still a little muddy. Depending on who you ask, Alexandrite is still considered a birthstone of June, in addition to Moonstone.) June Birthstone.

The ‘alexandrite effect’, as described by jewelers, is the natural color changing phenomenon of the gemstone. The color of this rare gemstone is green in daylight and deep red in darkness or incandescent light. Alexandrite can even appear to be pink or yellow in hue in natural light, and a columbine or raspberry red by incandescent light. This is representative of the mythology behind this interesting gemstone.

Alexandrite is associated with the planet Mercury — the trickster. Mercury is the quickest moving planet, said to be representative of how fast our thoughts and decisions can change. Mythology teaches us that Mercury represents both the messenger and the magician. It connects the mortal or ego self, the intuitive, or lower self, and the higher divine self. This is said to be embodied within the Alexandrite gemstone with the duality of color.

Alexandrite is believed to strengthen intuition, self esteem, and happiness, increase creativity and imagination, and help balance your emotions.
