Bigger is Not Always Better!- Watch Sell

Watch Sell

Vintage Patek Philippe

Over the last decade there has been a large shift in the luxury watch market towards timepieces with big and over sized cases. Many luxury brands such as Panerai, Ulysse Nardin, Breitling and Omega have released collections with cases that measured 44mm diameter or larger. Even Rolex who has a history of making mid sized watches embraced the trend; in 2007 they released the Yacht-Master II with a case that measured 44mm. The Yacht-Master II like many large watches has a thick case that really make it’s presence known and can even make the biggest wrist look small. These large sports watches are great attention getter and suit those who don’t mind having their watch get all the limelight.

Now during the past couple of years there has been a steadily growing group of consumers who are pushing for a return to form. This growing segment of  the market is purchasing timepieces that mirror the trends of the past, when watches rarely exceeded 37mm. The timepieces of the 50’s and 60’s traded flash for a more subdued beauty; these watches were made to compliment an outfit rather than outshine it. A great example of a classically created watch is the Patek Philippe Calatrava with a 37mm case, a stark, cream colored dial and only a small second sub dial. These type of watches tend to be attached to beautiful brown/black crocodile straps or had a small stainless steel bands. This new trend is so strong that consumers who can’t find a more modern interpretation of the classic wristwatch are actually going out and buying vintage pieces. We here at Raymond Lee Jewelers have a wide verity of vintage timepieces at amazing prices. Watch Sell.

Whether you prefer a large or a midsized watch, your watch collection in all honesty should have one of each. I know my last statement will sound like heresy to consumers who are steadfast in their adhere to a certain watch size but it is true. Watches are more than just a reliable way to tell time; they are silent and unique way of expressing something about ourselves to the world. Both watches have their time and place for example a large watch should be worn with a more casual outfit to spice it up. If you are dressing for a date or important social event, large wristwatches are a great option as they tend to attract attention and stands you out from the crowd. A midsized watch on the other hand should be worn at the office especially if you are wearing a suit. These watches lay low on the wrist and tend to only peek from underneath a dress shirt; giving those you work with a brief glimpse of luxury and often leave your coworkers wondering about whats on your wrist. These watches were created to enhance a great suit or tux not overpower it. If you are looking for a watch that is in-between perhaps purchasing a midsized watch that has a rose gold case, this is a great compromise as it catches a lot of attention but still radiates a timeless presence.

Watch Sell

Watch Sell

The popularity of the Panerai brand of luxury watches has exploded over the last decade; which may have to do with the fact that Sylvester Stallone has been pushing Panerai on all his pals in Hollywood. Panerai’s newest watch, the Marina Militare Pam 339,  needs no help from Rocky to garner and hold the attention of watch enthusiasts. This sleek new watch has been heating up the watch industry this past year and has become one of Panerai’s top-selling timepieces.

The Militare Pam 339 does not stray too far from the traditional Panerai style that we have grown accustom to. The Marina Militare features state-of-the-art technological innovation and a familiar yet distinctive look that allows it to differentiate itself  from the rest of the 2010 collection. This watch is definitely a statement piece with its 47 mm case and unique composite case material; it is no wonder they are flying off the shelves. Watch Sell.

The composite case is the main attraction of this watch, a first for any Paneria watch, this futuristic material is the result from the ceramization of aluminum through an electrochemical process. This new coating is stronger and lighter than steel and titanium. This composite process was commonly used in the aeronautic, car and motorcycle industries due to its superb capabilities. You can be sure this watch wont be getting any dents or dings while on your wrist.

The Militare Pam 339 has rich bronze matte look that gives the watch an either brown or black color depending on the lighting source. The dial and crown also have this same look which contrasts nicely with the milky brown color of the vintage leather strap. The strap has exquisite stitching that is reminiscent of the ecru color of Paneria’s Super-LumiNova. This is a very limited run with only 1,500 watches being released and with a price tag of $26,000. Paneria is slowly releasing this batch so be sure to keep you eyes open if you’re in the market for one as they are going fast. Raymond Lee Jewelers has plenty of Paneria watches on sale well below retail, make us your number one previously owned watch retailer.

Watch From “No Ordinary Family” TV Show- Watch Repair

Watch Repair

Watch Repair

No Ordinary Family is a new show on ABC that follows a fictional family, the Powells, who gain superhero like powers after their plane crashes in Brazil. The show mixes science-fiction with comedy and has a premise similar to NBC’s Heroes.  Both shows deal with ordinary people gifted with extraordinary powers who will struggle with being good or evil. No Ordinary Family differs from Heroes in that it is much more lighthearted and has a much smaller roster of superheroes, which allows you to care more for each character.

Last night’s episode, No Ordinary Friends, dealt with a museum heist mystery. The mystery thief throughout the episode was wearing a very distinct watch that had amazing luminosity. The watch was never verified by name but judging by the unique stainless steel case that had a crescent-shaped bridge which weights down the winding crown, I instantly knew it was a Panerai. I cant say for certain which model it was but it could have been either the PAM00104 Luminor Marina or the PAM250 Luminor Chrono Daylight.

Paneria has had a long history of amazing luminosity in their watches. Paneria was the official supplier of the Royal Italian Navy and its watches were worn by Italian commando frogmen during WWII. The exceptional luminosity ensured high visibility even in absolute darkness and allowed the frogmen to read the face of their watches in the dark waters, this greatly aided them in sinking allied ships. Paneria over the years has improved their luminosity technology and has become well known for watches that not only glow in the dark but last for a very long time. Watch Repair.

It makes sense that a great thief would use a Paneria with its great luminosity in a high stakes theft.

The Watch From The Expendables: Panerai Luminor 1950- Watch Sell

Watch Sell

Watch Sell

It is widely known that Sylvester Stallone is a fan of Panerai watch brand and is credited for making the luxury brand popular among celebrities. Sylvester Stallone discovered the Panerai brand while filming a movie in Rome in 1995. He later purchased a small batch of Panerai watches and gifted them to friends, including Arnold Schwarzenegger. Panerai soared in popularity to become the behemoth it is today. Sly is still a fan after all these years and in his latest movie, The Expendables, sports the beautiful Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante.

The Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante was originally designed for yachting and designed for the Panerai Classic Yachts challenge. The watch features a rattrapante chronograph, which allows the watch to time different actions at once and the ability to stop/start one count while the other continues. This watch was a very limited run by Panerai with only 500 produced.

The watch gets many close ups in The Expendables with Sly sporting it throughout the movie. Also in many promotional posters you see fellow co-stars Jason Statham and Terry Crews along with Sylvester Stallone proudly wearing this Panerai watch. The Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante is not the official watch of the movie but may as well be as it is flashed for the so many times for the camera throughout the movie. Watch Sell.

This luxury timepiece features two sub dials on either side of the watch with a textured black dial. The hands are a beautiful shade of blue that contrasts well with the rugged case and heavy black leather strap. The case measures at 44mm and would fit well on a larger wrist.

Preowned Luxury Watches: Panerai

Preowned Luxury Watches

Preowned Luxury Watches

Recently, we have been purchasing more and more Panerai preowned luxury watches.  We have always had one or two Panerai watches in our collection for sale, but now we have more.  Because we have been seeing so many my interest in the company has risen.  In the past I have been learning as much as I can about Rolex preowned luxury watches, and now I am switching to Panerai.  Ironically, while doing research about Panerai I found out that Rolex used to make Panerai movements which makes this transition even more intriguing.

Panerai was started in Florence, Italy in 1860 by a gentleman named Giovanni Panerai.  The company’s main focus back then was to make watches for the Royal Italian Navy.  It continued to make watches for the Italian Military for over one hundred years until 1993.  That was when the last watch made for the military.  They started marketing their watches to the general public and were struggling.  It wasn’t until 1995, when Sylvester Stallone bought a number of Panerai Luminor watches in a Panerai store in Rome, that the company started to grow again.

Panerai was bought by Richemont, a Swiss luxury goods company, in 1997.  Other companies of note owned by Richemont are Cartier, Van Cleef, and Piaget.  Richemont’s purchase of Panerai has proven to be a successful move as Panerai only seems to grow in popularity every year.

Most of Panerai watches are made in limited quantities (500, 1000, 2000, or 4000) units.  This creates the illusion that they are limited edition watches.  The problem is there are so many different models of Panerai watches that it discounts the limited quantities made.  However, every year Panerai does come out with their own special edition watches that are in fact limited.

Four major models of Panerai watches are Historic, Contemporary, Manifattura, and the Special Editions.  These four models make up the majority of their watches.  Panerai also has a contract with Ferrari to make watches under their trademark.  They have been partners since 2006 and they are supposed to part ways in 2010.

Panerai has a great history in the world of preowned luxury watches.  Their watches tend to hold value better than a majority of other companies.  They have been incredibly popular within the last couple of years due to the increased demand of wide diameter watches. Their prices in the Contemporary collection range anywhere from $6,000-$25,000.  Panerai is a wonderful preowned luxury watches company who make quality watches and sell to customers all throughout the world.

Which Watch Company is Counterfeited The Most?

Rolex (Fake)

Counterfeit watches used to be too easy to spot. There was a time when I could look at someones wrist from a distance and know if a watch was real or not. Now, they all look very similar. In our industry it is crucial to stay on top of the newest counterfeits. In an other post I recently wrote I had mentioned the new Rolex Deepsea with the inner bezel engraving already being copied. The watch has hardly been out very long at all. Tons of jewelry stores and pawn shops in Florida bought fake deepsea’s as real over the counter. I know you can’t rely on a sixth sense all the time, but when something doesn’t feel right these days, I pass. We have seen some really amazing watch copies over the years. People are spending real money developing them. Two main places I know that these watches are coming from are the Far East and South America. The South American copies are very interesting watches. Here is a great example, basically the South American counterfeiters are taking the movement from a stainless steel Rolex Submariner. They are casting a solid 18kt version of the same watch and using the genuine movement in a fake 18kt case and bracelet. The copies can be very good. When you open it up you are assured it is genuine by the movement right? Well, if you study the finish on the inside of the case and examine the hallmarks, you will see it’s not correct. At a quick glance, the watch appears genuine. The South Americans will do this same thing with many makes and models. As far as the Far East is concerned, there is nothing original about the watches they fake. The best ones I have seen have been by Panerai, Hublot, Audemars, and some Rolex models. Some of the other companies are easier to copy than Rolex because Rolex holds themselves to the highest standard in manufacturing. So any slight imperfection on a modern Rolex means it’s fake.
