The Allure of Collecting Vintage Rolex- Watch Sell

Collecting wristwatches is one of those hobbies that starts off innocently enough but can quickly turn into an all consuming passion. You may start out young collecting some Timex‘s, a Casio or two and if your lucky, a Seiko. Then you are off to college and your taste gets a bit more sophisticated. You want something to celebrate your independence, so  you splurge and get a rugged Swiss Military watch.

After two years of reading Baudelaire, Chomsky and Nietzsche you want a watch that reflects your new found maturity and you upgrade to a Hamilton. Time flies by and soon your walking across the stage in your cap and gown  and your graduation gift on your wrist; a brand new Movado. This Movado is your first introduction into the luxury watch market, and now you are hooked.

As you move up the corporate ladder, you may also desire to upgrade your timepiece from Movado to Tag Heur, Tag Heur to Omega, and from Omega to your Pièce de résistance: A Brand New Rolex! After that first Rolex you never look back and you have officially become a Rolex watch collector.

6605’s Movement

Rolex has one of the largest communities of watch collectors in the world, and with its amazing history and tremendous impact on the watch industry, it is easy to understand the strong following. Collectors respect the fact that Rolex has  practically invented the modern day wristwatch, the water resistant case and the self-winding mechanism. Another reason why collectors choose Rolex is the fact that the company controls every step of production of it watches, and keeps meticulous record of every piece, making identifying and collecting Rolex watches much easier.

This ease of identification plays a major role in the collector community as it allows collectors to identify age, model and serial number of every Rolex that they acquire. All these factors combined with Rolex’s brand recognition create an amazing resale value, Rolex watches can be sold quickly and at a very minimal loss. Often times you can purchase a Rolex wear it for years and sell it at only a fraction below its original retail value; this is why many collectors chase after rare vintage models whose value will only increase over the years.

A look Under the Case Back

Raymond Lee Jewelers was luck enough to get a rare vintage Rolex Datejust model 6605. As you can see from this picture, the timepiece is in amazing condition. The dial still retains its satin black finish. Its face is free from any scratches, and all of the mechanics are in excellent condition. One thing to I can’t stop marveling at is the watches movement. This watch was produced around 1954, and the smooth and fluid movement is a work of art.

Rolex introduced this model of Datejust 6605 at the Basel Fair and for the first time. It was the first production featuring the Cyclops magnifying bubble that you now find in all Rolex models. If you are looking for a piece of watch history, look no further than this amazing wristwatch!

President Obama’s Watches: Part 1- Jewelry Appraisal

Jewelry Appraisal

Barack's TAG-Heur

In the past we have covered the watches of various celebrities such Kanye West’s amazing Black PVD coated Rolex Submariner but have only briefly touched upon the watches of politicians. Today I wanted to focus on one of the most popular or polarizing (depending on which side of the aisle your on) politicians in American history, President Barack Obama. Our 44th President is known for wearing two watches, in this post I am going to cover the watch he wore as a senator and while campaigning.

In late 2007 when then Senator Obama was blazing across America on his campaign trail, many watch enthusiasts where speculating about the watch on his wrist. The flash of leather under a cuff or a glimpse of a large silver case got many thinking our future president was sporting a Paneria or even a Carrera. In actuality Barack Obama was wearing a TAG-Heur Series 1500 Two-Tone Diver on a brown leather strap.  I could not not find out whether President Obama purchased this watch himself or it was a gift but he has wearing this watch daily since 1991. Jewelry appraisal.

The TAG-Heur Series 1500 was released in 1991 as a cheaper alternative to more expensive models; and was a designed to have a bold, professional look without sacrificing its ability to be used as a diving piece. With a water resistance of 200 meters, a screw-down crown, plain white dial and  heavy duty full size case this timepiece would make a exceptional diving watch. The watch was released with a price tag of $575 with the leather strap. If you are looking to purchase this exact model you are out of luck as TAG has ceased production in 1998.

I think this is the perfect type of watch for a politician to wear, it is moderately priced so not to seem too flashy or elitist. Also I like that President Obama did not follow the traditional politician route and wear a cheap Casio or Timex to “connect” with Joe the plumber. The TAG with its raised gold triangles on the bezel make this watch look much more luxurious than it actually is.

Check back later for my the part two where I will discuss President Obama’s current watch.
