Spoltlight On: Igor Polotsky, Raymond Lee Jeweler’s Master Watchmaker

This month’s Boca Magazine features Raymond lee Jewelers; own master watchmaker Igor Polotsky in its Slice of Life segment.

Igor, who is certified by the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute as a 21st century master of his craft, has been a part of the Raymond Lee Jewelers family for the past 2 years of his three decade career.

Igor is an indispensable asset to Raymond Lee Jewelers, as he is one of the 9 U.S. watchmakers authorized by Cartier to repair its watches; he also is adept at servicing the other luxury watch brands of Raymond Lee Jewelers, like Rolex, Patek Phillipe, and  Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Boca Magazine gets the inside scoop from the master himself on what inspired his career path (it has to do with some surprisingly heavy salt), why he left his life in native Russia behind, and the laugh-out-loud reason that Igor’s talents proved too much to handle for his employer at Tiffany & Co.’s 5th avenue showroom.

Candy!Candy!Candy!- Zero calories! The kind you wear!-jewelry design

Semiprecious Gems- Jewelry Repair

At our store in Boca Raton we love candy.  In fact we have huge bowls of it all over the store for our clients to enjoy when they come in.  As I look at one of the bowls it hit me each flavor has a colored gem counterpart.  Instead of a bowl of candies flavored with Cherry, Green Apple, Grape, and Blue Raspberry imagine if they were bright red rubies, vivid green peridot, deep amethysts and brilliant blue topaz.  Each one of these stones has their own unique properties making them special.

This year with the economy in a state of uncertainty and the holidays fast approaching why not look to the colored gemstone world for your loved ones gifts.  The colors are intriguing to most everyone and since most everyone can afford them it is a good option for them.  Many designers are known for using color in their repertoire.  Amongst them David Yurman, John Hardy, Judith Ripka and Cartier are a few designers known for their use of color.  Of these designers David Yurman is known for his cable bracelets capped in colored stones.  We have a large selection of David Yurman jewelry at Raymond Lee Jewelers.  Come on in to see us.  Until next time stay fabulous-  Richard your South Florida Jewelry Guru!

Rolex Air King: A History- Watch Sell

Watch Sell

Watch Sell

The Rolex name has always been synonymous with quality and luxury. Often times these two words come at a high price, Raymond Lee Jewelers is here to change that perception. We offer modern and vintage Rolex wristwatches for incredibly low prices. One such watch is the Rolex Air-King,a part of the oyster perpetual line, it is one of the least expensive wristwatch in the Rolex collection.

During War World II one of the most popular watches among British RAF pilots were Rolex wristwatches. Rolex had come to be known as very durable, water resistant and able to keep ticking even after the heavy abuse they received from pilots defending the British’s skies. Many pilots died defending their homeland with Rolex watches strapped to their wrists. After War World II, the founder of Rolex, German-born Hans Wilsdorf, was so moved by this fact that he introduced a new line of hand-wound watches called Air Tiger, Air Lion, Air Giant and the Air King. As time went on these watches were fitted with an Oyster Perpetual movement and slowly Rolex dropped the other “Air” lines and only the Air-King was left.

The Air-King is a great watch for those looking to get into the luxury watch market, it has a elegantly simple design at a low price.  Great for everyday use, watch sell!

Breitling Chronomat: A History- Watch Repair

Watch Repair

Watch Repair

Breitling is a name that has as much to do with aviation as it does with watches. The watchmaker was founded in 1884 and for years has produced watches of exquisite quality but it was not until 1940 that Breitling became world renowned for its watches. It was in this year that Breitling patented a wristwatch that contained a circular slide rule in its bezel. Released in 1941 during the height of War World II, the Breitling Chronomat became wildly popular with aircraft pilots who needed the best tools to help them survive the dangerous sky’s of Europe. It was during this tumultuous time in our history that the quality and superb function of the Breitling Chronomat became legend. Pilots all over the world would seek out Breitling watches for years to come, knowing that their planes may fail them but their watch would not.

Breitling continued to create versions of the Chronomat well into the late 1970’s until the rise of the electric watch forced Breitling to cease production and close its doors. In 1979 Breitling was purchased by a new owner;  new models were being released but the Chronomat would lay dormant for five years.

During the Chronomat’s hiatus the watch market had been saturated with LCD, LED and quartz watches which had become a staple of the 80’s. Behind all the consumers that craved flashing red numbers there was a small but growing market seeking the quality mechanical watches of old. Breitling took a bold step by reintroducing the Chronomat in 1984 specifically designed for pilots.

The new Chronomat had a mechanical Valjoux 7750 movement that was so successful that it’s still used today. The pushers and crowns were made more prominent and the old type 42 slide rule was replaced with a rotating timing bezel with four projecting “rider tabs,” allowing pilots who often wore gloves in the cockpit  to manipulate the watch easier. The new Chronomat had been tested to withstand the accelerated pressure of 20G, which no pilot could endure.

As the years ticked on the Breitling Chronomat would become a top seller and its popularity would go well beyond the aviation world. Many versions of the Chronomat would be introduced and would eventually be marketed towards yachtsmen and other luxury watch buyers. Raymond Lee Jewelers has many Breitling watches and we carry beautiful modern and vintage Chronomats. We also have a CW21 watchmaker on hand to do all types of watch repair.

Florida Jewelry Repair: What is Rhodium?

Florida Jewelry Repair

Florida Jewelry Repair

I just got a call asking if we can change yellow gold jewelry to look like white gold.  The answer of course, as the #1 store for Florida jewelry repair, is yes.  This happens to be one of our most popular jewelry repairs.  We dip the yellow gold in rhodium and it comes out looking like white gold.

Then the customer asked me, “What is rhodium?”  I had no idea.  I knew that it was something that we dipped the gold jewelry in to look like white gold, but what exactly is it?  Is it melted white gold?  Is it platinum?  I realized I had no clue.

In order to find out, I did what any normal 21st century young person would do; I Googled it.  It turns out rhodium, according to Wikipedia it’s a rare, silvery-white metal that is in the platinum family.  Apparently it is one of the rarest precious metals in the world.

Rhodium’s primary use is as a catalytic converter in automobiles, but it is also commonly used in jewelry.  It is electroplated on to gold jewelry to either look like white gold or give white gold or platinum a shiny look.

While rhodium plating a piece of gold jewelry will not last forever, it will last for a few years depending on how and where you wear it.  It is a cheap alternative to buying another piece with the same look.

Rhodium plating your jewelry is a common Florida jewelry repair.  It usually can be done within a few days.
