As Rolex continues to be a global leader in luxury watches, they keep making additions to some of their classic watches.  This year they introduced a 41mm Day-Date and Datejust to keep up with the growing trend for “big” watches and also introduced a new Rolex Submariner 116610.  It has been over 20 years since Rolex has changed the Submariner’s design.

The first change of note is the new 116610 model number.  In more recent years it has been 16610 and before that 1680.   This means the changes in the new Submariner were drastic enough to warrant a new and different model number.

Some new features of the 116610 include wider lugs, larger crown guards, a ceramic bezel, and bigger hour markers.  The wider lugs are surprisingly more noticeable than I thought they would be.  Looking at pictures, I never even noticed a change, but now that I have seen it in person it stands out.  The lugs give the Submariner a bigger look that people are seeking.

Like the lugs, the crown guards are also significantly larger than the 16610 model.  Again, pictures do not show the full extent of the increase in size; it is much easier to notice in person.

The ceramic bezel, or what Rolex calls the Cerachrom bezel, is an addition everyone was waiting for.  The GMT-Master II already made this jump to the new bezel and the public seem to like it.

The new hour markers on the New Rolex Submariner 116610 were necessary because of the additions of the larger lugs and crown guards.  In order to keep the symmetry of the design it made sense to increase the size of the markers.

The new Sub still has a 40mm case which it has had since its introduction.  The retail value jumped significantly from $6,000 for the 16610 to $7,375 for the new 116610.  As expected it is still pressure-proof for 1,000 feet under water.

With all the new designs for the New Rolex Submariner 116610 it still has that classic Submariner look.  It is a great gents every day watch that can also be worn dressed up.
