Jewelry Terminology: Round Brilliant Cut

Florida Diamond

Florida Diamond Sellers

In jewelry terminology a round brilliant diamond cut stone has multiple facets that give the stone maximum brilliance.  A round brilliant cut looks somewhat like a cone.

The first round brilliant cut was invented by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919.  Today a round brilliant Florida diamond has 58 facets cut into two pyramids base to base, 33 on the crown and 25 on the base.

The connection between the crown angle and the pavilion angle have the greatest effect on what the diamond looks like.  A steep crown can be counteracted by a shallow pavilion and vice versa.  Cut grades from GIA are excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor.  If you are closer or farther from the diamond when grading it you may get a different result.  The polish and symmetry add to the grading of the cut of a round brilliant.  The polish tells how smooth the facets are and the symmetry tells how the facets are aligned.

The round brilliant diamond has proven to be the most popular shape.  Most engagement rings include a round brilliant cut diamond.  While there are dozens of different cuts of diamonds, the round brilliant cut remains the most desirable.
