Why Are There Jewelry Buyers On Every Corner?

There are jewelry buyers on every corner. Check out this picture of 47th street in New York City….

Jewelry Buyers on every corner

There are hundreds if not thousands of jewelry buyers in major metropolitan areas. Why? Because the more people, the more jewelry, the more jewelry being sold. Boca Raton, Florida is a major jewelry buying and jewelry selling area. There is a very mixed crowd in South Florida. a vast majority of the retirement population from all over the USA ends up in Florida. There are a number of reasons for this, one is the tax incentives involved for retirees. Another is the obvious, the GREAT weather!  Towns like Boca Raton that were very undeveloped 30 years ago are packed full of retirees and young people alike. As the retirees get used to the good casual life in Boca Raton they come to realize that they don’t wear there jewelry anymore because there life style has changed. Its hard to split jewelry amongst children and easier to split money, so they sell jewelry in Boca Raton. We will follow up to this article with more info shortly.

Wedding Wednesday: Neutral Bridesmaids Dresses are a Hot Trend

A recent, lovely recurring theme cropping up on wedding blogs across the net is the emergence of bridesmaids in subdued, neutral hues. Whether a bride opts to dress her girls in varying shades or one tone for a monochromatic look, this trend allows the ladies to create a soft, beautiful addition to the altar. Here are some of our favorite looks:

Mastin Studios via Style Me Pretty

These ladies look lovely in this warm shade of ivory. Varying styles allow each bridesmaid to show off her personality, while the different textures on the dresses add interest both on the big day and in the photographs that will last for decades.

Michael & Anna Costa Photographers Ltd. via Style Me Pretty

For a sophisticated take, turn to fall’s staple neutral slate gray. These bridesmaids look chic and effortlessly elegant in these flattering long gowns. With each maid in the same dress and tone, everything from hair to jewelry to accessories can be left up to the bridesmaids to select to suit her own tastes.

Jose Villa photography via OnceWed.com

These ‘maids complement the blushing bride in, what else? Blush! The diaphanous gowns add whimsy while the lilac undertones of the blush add an extra layer of femininity.

Braedon Photography via Project Wedding

These bridesmaids shine in stone colored chiffon, and add pops of color with jewel-toned shoes and colorful bouquets.

Riso Studio via Style Me Pretty

Another bunch of bridesmaids in blush, each maid has customized her look to reflect her style while staying in the same color family. The different shades and materials could lack cohesion otherwise, but the careful pairing of neutral shoes is both flattering (hello longer legs!) and unifying. The short length of every dress also helps tie all these different looks together.

Basing your bridesmaids’ dresses off of a neutral color palette is both beautiful and a lifesaver for your maids. Regardless of your love for fuchsia, your bridesmaids are the ones shelling out for a new gown to suit your Big Day desires; they’ll love you (even more than they already do) if you select, or let them pick, a dress in a classic neutral they’ll really wear again. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to gift fun, patterned or bright accessories to your bridesmaids, should you choose. And if your brides will be donning colorful jewelry for your wedding? Well we’ve got a post for that too!

Feature Friday: September’s Sapphires

Welcome to September, readers. This month ushers in fall, football, and a new birthstone: sapphire. From the Greek word sappheiros, meaning “blue stone” sapphires are a precious gem that come in many colors. In fact, when a sapphire is deep rep, it is considered to be a ruby, which has an identical composition to that of sapphires.

Depending on the color of a sapphire, it is believed to bring the wearer full creative potential, inspiration, luck, and clarity. We think that while these are all desirable, a piece of sapphire jewelry is even likelier to bring you compliments en masse. Check out some of Raymond Lee Jewelers’ picks for September’s birth stone.

This fun and bright pink sapphire ring is a stunning addition to any jewelry collection.

18K White Gold and Multi Colored Sapphire Line Bracelet

Pink, green and sky blue sapphires stud this white gold ring and surround a wave of diamonds. The gradation of the stones creates one of Fall’s biggest trends, ombre, in a beautiful palette.

18kt White Gold Diamond and Sapphire Bracelet

This updated take on the classic tennis bracelet features stunning blue sapphires and diamonds accenting dual bands with funky geometric shapes. It’s the perfect combination of modern and vintage that makes this piece completely unique.

Last but not least, this piece is for the September-born gents in your life. Crisp, white gold bars bracket clean lines of sapphire and diamond rows to create a luxurious and masculine work of art for his wrist.

Industry Update: Jessica Simpson to Debut Fine Jewelry Collection

When Jessica Simpson stepped onto the scene in the late 90’s as one of the day’s pop-starlets, not too many people would have guessed that a decade later she’d be at the helm of a fashion empire.

The blonde beauty has turned her Jessica Simpson Collection company into a billion-dollar firm, encompassing clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories. Her denim line is sold in more than 650 department stores, and apparently consumers truly cannot get enough of the J. Simps brand.

Zales announced earlier this week that in October 2011 it will debut a collaboration with Jessica Simpson and Firestar Diamonds called “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.”

“Jessica Simpson is viewed as the girl next door, and our guest is a midmarket guest and we believe she is someone that they can identify with. She has great reach and great power across a number of different categories, so doing a diamond fashion collection made perfect sense,” Zales’ CEO Theo Killion tells Women’s Wear Daily.

The line will feature pendants, rings, bracelets, earrings, and bangles in gold, silver and diamonds, and prices range from $79.99 to $999, making the line easily accessible to Simpson’s enormous fan base.

Jess tells Woman’s Wear Daily: ““I love that a piece of fine jewelry can be passed down from generation to generation. I cherish the pieces that were given to me, so it is really special to be able to design my own.”

RLJ readers, are you excited to see this line of fine jewelry? Are you a fan of Jessica Simpson’s fashion empire?

Wedding Wednesday: Engagement and Wedding Jewelry Trends for 2011

Key Trends from The Knot & WeddingChannel.com’s Bridal Jewelry Study

engagement statistics, average cost of engagement ring, raymond lee jewelers

Stats via MarketWatch.com

Yesterday, TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com released the results of its Engagement & Jewelry Study, which surveyed more than 10,000 U.S. brides and 1,000 U.S. grooms engaged or married in the past year. This study is the most comprehensive survey of wedding jewelry purchases, and shows some clear trends for 2011 – Raymond Lee Jewelers breaks it down.

Most Grooms Aren’t Basing Their Budget on the Economy

With the economy making a measly recovery (on a good day) one would think that engagement ring sales would have taken a big hit, but grooms aren’t skimping on the most important purchase of their lives. Only 14% of men said that they had purchased a less expensive ring due to the shaky economy. The average cost of an engagement ring is around $5200, down only $600 from 3 years ago, while the luxury engagement ring segment spends an average of $13,500.

Round Rings Rule

Rounds remain the most popular choice for engagement rings with 53% of brides opting for a round diamond. The luxury segment prefers rounds even more, with 57% of luxury engagement rings featuring round diamonds. And while princess remains the next most popular cut, cushion cut diamonds are trending for both the typical engagement segment and luxury segment.

Among the Luxury Segment, Tradition is Tops

Perhaps the reason that rounds shine brighter among the luxury segment is their classic shape. Also, luxury engagement rings feature larger center stones and might only require one large, solitaire round to make a statement. Another tradition among those who live luxe? Grooms asking the bride’s father for permission – a whopping 80% of them asked Pops before popping the question. One tradition that spans across both segments? Getting down on bended-knee: 77% of grooms opted for this.

Uniqueness is Prized

Grooms are choosing to add personal elements to pre-existing ring designs or to commission original designs. 41% of grooms, and 59% of grooms within the luxury segment, are adding to or creating new designs. Additionally, while white gold remains the most popular metal, grooms are favoring metals like tungsten and titanium in their rings.

Grooms are Sticking to Brick and Mortar Stores

Only 9% of grooms purchased their rings from online retailers, while 35% of them bought the ring at a national jewelry chain. Local and independent jewelers, like Raymond Lee Jewelers, accounted for 39% of all groom’s engagement ring purchases. And regardless of the name on the receipt, brides are gently nudging their beloveds towards “The One”, with 65% admitting to being “somewhat involved” and 31% “very involved.”

Jewelers, what kinds of trends have you noticed in engagement and wedding jewelry sales? Brides & Grooms, share with us your purchasing process in the comments below.

What Does the High Price of Gold Mean?

Over the past few days, the price of gold has skyrocketed, reaching record highs and even briefly surpassing platinum prices. As the uncertain future of the US economy and European markets make traders nervous, gold continues to seem like a sure bet – making it even more valuable. But what does the higher price of gold actually mean?

Criminals have noticed that Gold is more expensive too.

A wave of gold-related robberies and thefts have been reported across the globe. Matthew Phillips of Freakonomics blog reports on L.A.’s rash of street-robberies and smash-n-grabs, as well as robberies and street muggings in Iraq and Guyana. Retailers and the general public should be extra vigilant while gold prices soar.

Gold will continue to be a desirable addition to investor portfolios.

Gold Prices for 8/23/11

According to the Wall Street Journal, “…a selloff in gold is unlikely in the current economic environment as investors will be hard put to find an alternative asset that can protect their wealth as well as gold,” said George Gero, a vice president with RBC Capital Markets Global Futures.

Traders will be affected by the price of gold in the markets.

Raymond Lee Jewelers in action at an auction.

For the second time this year, The Shanghai Gold Exchange raised the margin requirements on gold futures contracts by 1%, making investors pay more up front to buy gold.

Big Prices mean Big Business for Jewelers who buy gold.

Raymond Lee Jewelers - We Buy Gold

As the line for gold prices ticks up on market graphs, the lines out the doors of jewelers grow longer. Americans looking to cash in on their unwanted or unworn gold are flocking to jewelers who buy gold. Once scrap gold is purchased, it can be purified and turned into gold bars or re-cast for different pieces of jewelry.

Readers, have you sold gold before? Are you more likely to now that you can earn a substantial amount for the gold you own? And jewelers – have you noticed an uptick in business (we have at Raymond Lee Jewelers!)? Have you beefed up security measures in light of gold’s higher prices?

Discuss below,

Wedding Wednesday: Colored Bridal Jewelry

If we can use one, and only one word to describe this season’s must-wear wedding jewels, it’s this: Color, with a capital C.

colorful bridal jewelry, Raymond Lee Jewelers

Brides-to-be across the globe are going gaga for precious stones in every hue of the rainbow. From Brides to The Knot, the powers-that-be in the wedding world have shouted their support for this colorfully gorgeous trend. Raymond Lee Jewelers is South Florida’s first and most trusted source for luxury pre-owned precious gems, and we’ve found a stone for every bride in love with both their groom and Roy G. Biv.

Rubies

18K Yellow and White Gold, Ruby and Diamond Necklace

Rubies are incredibly rare precious gems prized beyond diamonds in some cultures. The most desirable rubies are called “pigeon blood” rubies which, admittedly, is pretty gross, but the color of these stones is incomparable. Brides who wear rubies down the aisle are passionate, fiery and luxe. “The ruby definitely is something to smile about for its exquisite beauty when set as jewelry, and because the ruby also stands for peace and contentment.” – admirable attributes of any marriage.

Topaz

Orange Topaz and Diamond Pendant on Amazon.com

Topaz are the birthstone of the month of November and are famed for their amber hues, but they range in color from pink, yellow blue, peach, gold and even green. Like diamonds, topaz are graded by the 4 C’s, and are impossible to identify with the naked eye when compared to look-alike Citrine. Orange topaz represent constancy, loyalty, faithfulness and strength, making them an excellent choice for wedding-day jewels.

Yellow Diamonds

Yellow Diamonds, Tiffany, Raymond lee jewelers

Tiffany Yellow Diamonds

Once thought to be inferior to just plain ol’ regular diamonds, the yellow diamond (or Fancy colored diamond) has quickly leveled the playing field with its crystal clear cousin. Celebs, perhaps most noticeably Mr. Gucci Mayne, have popularized fancy and intense colored yellow diamonds, leaving brides-to-be clamoring for this stunning, sunny rock. Tiffany & Co., in honor of their famous Tiffany Yellow Diamond jumped on this timeless yet trendy bandwagon with a slew of lovely yellow diamond jewelry.

Emeralds

Vintage emerald, rose gold and diamond bracelet.

With gorgeous deep green all over the runways this season, no stone is more Fall-ready than emerald. These gorgeous stones dazzle in pure green and shine with uniqueness. Emerald green is “…the colour of beauty and of constant love. In ancient Rome, green was the colour of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love….
The magnificent green of the emerald is a colour which conveys harmony, love of Nature and elemental joie de vivre.”

Sapphires

For fast approaching September nuptials, why not wear next month’s designated birthstone? Sapphires come in a variety of colors naturally, including pink, but are famed for their gorgeous blue tones. It is believed by some that sapphires “promote joy, faith, hope and protection during long journeys.

Amethyst

Raymond lee Jewelers - Cariter 18 kt gold and amethyst ring

Cartier 18kt White Gold and Amethyst ring

Gorgeous amethyst stones range from lavender to royal purple in color; it is the stone associated with nobles from Catherine the Great to the ancient Egyptians. Its name is derived from the Greek word for “not drunk”; even if your jewels can’t steer your hubby’s fraternity brother groomsman away from the bar, rest assured that your guests will only be focused on your stunning purple gems. Amethyst, according to Leonardo Da Vinci, “holds the power to dissipate evil thoughts and quicken one’s intelligence.”

Brides-to-be, are you planning on donning colorful jewels for the big day? Did your fiance gift you with a colorful engagement ring? Discuss in the comments below!

Introducing JA New York’s new designers | National Jeweler

National Jeweler published an article featuring the emerging jewelry designers that will be featured at the JA Summer Show, currently taking place at The Javits Center, New York, NY.  With enough time in between the NY Antique Jewelry & Watch Show and the IWJG Show, we were able to sneak in some time at the JA Summer Show.  Lucky us, we’ll have a sneak peak at the up and coming hottest trends in jewelry, and be able to say a quick hello to some vendors we’ve worked with in the past.

JA Summer Show

Of the jewelry designers featured in the article,G & G Creations stood out with some of the most incredible approaches to jewelry design that I’d ever seen. In fact, I’ve written fan mail already…

With a combined seven decades of experience in jewelry design and manufacturing, the newly formed Boston-based G&G Creations is a force to be reckoned with. In 2010, Vahe Ghazarian and Esin Guler and master gem setter Mihran Guler banded together to launch G&G Creations, a fabricator of high-end silver and karat gold designs.

Collections to date total four: Imprint features organic-looking lily pad shapes; Scroll features timeless swirl effects; Nyx, named for the Greek goddess of the night, showcases contrasting dark and light motifs (like skulls set with yellow gold accents); Faith pieces pay homage to religion. Couture or one-off pieces are also available.

All merchandise is made in the United States and starts at less than $1,000 retail. G&G currently has two retail accounts, including Boston’s Barmakian Jewelers. Fun fact: Sevan Biçakçi is a family friend of Esin and Mihran! – JCK

Masculine Monday: NY Antique Jewelry and Watch Show (and Tell)

Masculine Monday: Give Your Rolex Watch Away

Good Morning Everybody!  Hope that you’ve all rested up over the weekend, and that a case of the ‘Monday’s’ is not setting the mood for your day.  With Monday being reserved for our Masculine Monday Entries, today’s Masculine portion will come to you in a varied delivered way…

Today, Gents, our advice for some serious Girlfriend/Wife/Best Friend bonus points… give the lady your wristwatch.

Preferably, give her your Gents Rolex wristwatch!

Rolex GMT

We touched on this trend just as it was sparked a few months ago, where Jennifer Aniston and her men’s Rolex wristwatch was featured in our entry, ‘Breaking the Mold‘.  As time has passed, more and more gals are wanting a gents wristwatch, as opposed to a ladies model.

Along with the other most prevalent trends being shown by consumers at the New York Antique Jewelry & Watch Show, which we’ll touch on later, many women are looking for Gents Rolex models for themselves. It has become one of the strongest trends withing the watch industry.

“Many women are looking for gents Rolex models for themselves. That is the new trend.”

This comes straight from the source, the Raymond Lee Jewelers VP, who is currently exhibiting a carefully chosen selection of Raymond Lee Jewelers Antique Jewelry and Luxury Watches at the famous US Antique Show.

Being a true modern gentlemen with style and substance does require the ability to choose the perfect gift for the one you love. When the next Birthday or Anniversary rolls around, consider picking up your gal a Gents Rolex to light up her face with glee.

Better yet, find yourself a new timepiece to liven up the life on your wrist, and give her your current gents wristwatch as a gift. This will be both sweet and sentimental, and you’ll be thanking me in no time.
